What is white screen of death

So you may ask what is white screen of death, even though you have encountered it, you may not know its a white screen of death in wordpress. However, if WordPress is not working properly, it sometimes displays a blank screen instead of the content of your site whenever someone visits your website.

This may be the coding or a database misconfiguration. Lets say if you are driving a car and your code is the fuel making it to move, therefore, the white screen of death is what happens when there is no fuel in the car to move it to your destination. So your drive your car again (i.e display your content) when your fuel your car.

That is you can’t make wordpress work again without getting rid of wordpress white screen.

If you are an experienced user of wordpress and you are good in using an FTP client you should turn on WP_DEBUG to determine why your site is displaying white screen. When WP_DEBUG mode displays error messages on the white screen that explain why your site isn’t working properly. You can use those messages as a guide in troubleshooting the issue.

However, not everyone knows how to use WP_DEBUG, there are other ways to find out what’s causing the white screen of death. I will begin with one of the most major problem to white screen of death: plugins.

PLUGINS

Plugins are what gives functionality to wordpress. It may be causing a compatibility issue. If you can access the Admin Screen of your website, you can try by deactivating all of your Plugins and then reactivating them one by one. If you are unable to access your Screens, log in to your website via FTP. Locate the folder wp-content/plugins and rename the Plugin folder plugins_old. This will deactivate all of your Plugins.

THEME

Your theme might be the cause to this issue. This is especially likely if you are experiencing the white screen of death after you have just activated a new Theme, or created a New Site in a WordPress Network, or newly updated wordpress. Log in to the Admin Screen and activate the default WordPress Twenty Sixteen Theme. If you can’t access your Admin Screen, access your website via FTP and navigate to the /wp-content/themes/ folder. Rename the folder for the active Theme.

However, your theme directory may renamed. This is common for developers who have just created a local development environment and cloned the database, which is pointing to a theme (or theme directory) that might be missing or renamed. To test this solution, try accessing wp-login.php or /wp-admin/. If you see anything, this is a good indication it’s theme-related. Log in as an administrator, then try to view the front-end and you should see a WordPress error message to the effect of: The theme directory “{theme-name}” does not exist. You can solve this in any number of ways, including switching themes on the admin side, renaming your directory, or editing the “theme” and “stylesheet” records in wp_option.

If after all this and you are still experiencing the problem, you can re-install wordpress and re-install your plugins and theme one by one, it will display your content without any errors. Do not forget that before anything you should have an back up of your entire website most especially your database.
